Introducing WhyWork
Welcome to the future of work - you’re here whether you’re ready or not!
Those words ran through my head many times over the last six months, as I read countless stories about the Great Resignation and the disruption it’s caused across the country. I wasn’t just a passive consumer of information though, I found myself experiencing both ends of the story. I was among the millions of Americans finally acknowledging burnout and reevaluating their relationship with work. I was also watching my employer untangle the keys to recruitment and retention, helping out wherever I could because I believe in our mission (and regularly despair over the future of civil service). I spent months researching labor trends (and post-work manifestos), trying to predict the varying needs of different demographic groups, all while stumbling through my own changing perception of work.
I quickly learned there is no single answer - what people need to be fulfilled is as unique as they are. This led me to realize the Great Resignation cannot be easily boiled down to sound bites about lazy employees or heartless business owners. Our struggle through this changing world of work is due in large part to a disconnect in communication between those seeking labor and those supplying it. Employees find it easier to quit than to ask for what they need, and employers are struggling to solicit feedback in ways that generate honest answers. The world of work is changing fast, but the 250+ years of cultural and social norms that govern it did not change overnight. We need to improve our communication and there’s no time to waste.
That’s why I started WhyWork, a consulting service for businesses and employees seeking to navigate this new world together through improved communication. WhyWork takes a human-centric approach by putting people - both employers and employees alike - at the heart of our process. We prioritize listening over prescribing and believe that your employees are your best teachers. I’m thrilled to apply 16 years of human resources, education, and crisis management work to this new endeavor, joining three generations of female entrepreneurs in my family.
